Engender

Thursday 20 May

Feeling unrepresented? You're not the only one...

Lots of post-election comment on the number of women MPs and how at this rate it'll be our great great great great grandaughters who might just see equal representation in Westminster.  We also have less women in the cabinet now. Here's a selection:

Catriona Burness in The Herald Male-dominated election sees record return of women MPs

Jenni Russell in TimesOnline The elections biggest loser is us, Ladies

Yvonne Roberts in Comment is Free Feeling diminished?  It's time for action

Carole Cadwalladr in The Guardian's Comment is Free This collusion to keep women out of power is sinister

Katharine Viner in Comment is Free A new kind of politics? With a top table looking like that?

Maggie Brown and Jane Martinson in The Guardian Why were there so few women on TV this General Election?

Inspiring Women Meeting

The next meeting of Engenders Inspiring Women group will discuss whether women make natural campaigners.  As a starting point we'll take the recent F-Word piece by Mhairi Guild, In our satin tights, fighting for our rights!  But are women natural campaigners?     Please read the remit of the group and if you would like to come along email Carol to let her know - carol.flack@engender.org.uk

The meeting is on Tuesday 8th June in the Engender office, 5.30-7pm

You'll find summaries of all past Inspiring Women meetings on the the members area of our website - please get in touch if you need a reminder of your log in.

Dissertation Research - Can you help?

Ali from the Edinburgh Universtiy Feminist Group is looking for women to participate in her research for her dissertation.  Her project s called "Reflections on non-consensual and unwanted sexual experiences: beyond the consensual sex/rape dichotomy".   She is organising a women-only focus group w/b 25th May and will conduct individual interviews in Edinburgh in July.  Seehere for more details or if  you would like to take part.

Wales Women's Coalition lose funding

The Welsh Assembly Government will no longer fund the Wales Women's National Coalition and unless this decision is overturned the organisation will close at the end of June.  WWNC is the only representative membership network organisation for women in Wales and does vital campaigning work.  It's loss will leave Welsh women without international representation.   The coalition are asking women to email the Welsh first minister in their support - see here for details

Jobs

Edinburgh and Lothain Racial Equality Council are looking for a full-time Community Development Assistant.  Seehere for more details
